Devil's Food Cake

Total Time: 1 hr 40 mins Preparation Time: 25 mins Cook Time: 1 hr 15 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 9 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 eggs, unbeaten
  • 2/3 cup sour milk
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water, boiling
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint flavoring

Recipe

  • 1 cream butter and sugar, add eggs.
  • 2 mix milk, soda, and vanilla, mix well.
  • 3 add flour, mix well.
  • 4 batter will be very thin.
  • 5 pour into a greased and floured 9x 13 cake pan.
  • 6 bake at 350* for 45 minute.
  • 7 frost with peppermint chocolate flavored frosting.
  • 8 cook sugar, salt, water and corn syrup to the soft ball stage (238 degrees). remove mixture from heat.

  • 10 pour hot syrup slowly in a fine steam over egg whites, beating constantly. add peppermint and continue beating until frosting stands up in peaks. quickly spread on cake.
